Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was the prominent pastor of a local black Baptist church, and King followed in his father’s footsteps as soon as he reached adulthood. As a social activist, King was instrumental in finding a moral and non-violent way to fight and overcome legally sanctioned racism and injustice in the American South of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Although often criticized, King received a multitude of honors including the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, the 1965 American Liberties Medallion, the 1966 Margaret Sanger Award, the 1971 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Recording for “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam”, and the 1977 US Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.
